Title: The Enlightenment of Bees

Publisher: Thomas Nelson Release Date: July 9, 2019

Genre: Women’s Fiction

Sometimes a shattered dream leads to an amazing journey.

At twenty-six, apprentice baker Mia West has her entire life planned out: a Craftsman cottage in Seattle, a job baking at The Butter Emporium, and her first love—her boyfriend, Ethan—by her side. But when Ethan declares he “needs some space,” Mia’s carefully planned future crumbles.

Feeling adrift, Mia joins her vivacious housemate Rosie on a humanitarian trip around the world funded by a reclusive billionaire. Along with a famous grunge rock star, a Rwandan immigrant, and an unsettlingly attractive Hawaiian urban farmer named Kai, Mia and Rosie embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

From the slums of Mumbai to a Hungarian border camp during the refugee crisis, Mia’s heart is challenged and changed in astonishing ways—ways she never could have imagined. As she grapples with how to make a difference in a complicated world, Mia realizes she must choose between the life she thought she wanted and the life unfolding before her.

In a romantic adventure across the globe, The Enlightenment of Bees beautifully explores what it means to find the sweet spot in life where our greatest passions meet the world’s greatest need

The Enlightenment of Bees

The Enlightenment of Bees is the latest novel by author Rachel Linden. This compelling story is about Mia, a young lady from Seattle who is passionate about baking. After dating her boyfriend Ethan for six years, Mia is hurt and shocked when a proposal ultimately turns into a break up. Mia also ends up losing her baking internship at the bakery where she worked so she decides last minute to embark on a humanitarian trip with her friend and roommate, Rosie.

Since she was young, Mia has longed to follow in the footsteps of her favorite aunt by making the world a better place. The trip, she believes, is the perfect means for turning her dream into reality. On the trip, Mia learns and grows as a person and ultimately realizes that her love for baking can be the catalyst for making the world a lovelier place.

The Enlightenment of Bees

The Enlightenment of Bees is an intriguing and intelligent story. Overall, it is really good fiction! I appreciated that the story was realistic and clean, a rare combo, it seems, when it comes to Christian fiction. I enjoyed so many aspects of this story and could relate to Mia in so many ways. The story was extremely well written and the aspects that detailed Mia’s time serving the needy were heart wrenching. While The Enlightenment of Bees is a work of fiction, it is patent that the details about impoverished communities around the world are not.

This inspiration this story provides is twofold as it is enjoyable and also leaves readers thinking about what actions they can take, both large and small, to make the world a lovelier place. The Enlightenment of Bees was a lovely and compelling read and I give it my highest recommendation. I’m very much looking forward to reading whatever Rachel Linden writes next!

I received The Enlightenment of Bees compliments of Thomas Nelson in exchange for my honest review.
