In honor of National School Choice Week in America, check out 4 truths I’m preaching to myself as a Christian mom who homeschools her kids.
1. My homeschooled children aren’t better off spiritually because they’re educated differently.
All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). The ground is level at the cross as we are all equally and desperately in need of a Savior. And salvation comes through Him, not a particular school choice (John 14:6).
2. The biggest threat to my kids insn’t outside of them.
The biggest threat to my kids is the sin in their hearts. Fear based messages tempt me to believe that if I’m overprotective with my kids, their lives will have more desirable outcomes. I wonder what benefit that would yield, though, if they’re spared certain things, but remain spiritually dead. I don’t want my kids to live foolishly, yet I’m comforted knowing God can turn fools into faithful followers of Him. I’m living proof.
3. School choice is a privilege.
God doesn’t owe me anything, yet in His kindness, He’s generously given me everything and more in Jesus, including living in a time and society in which school choice exists. This ought not lead to war with parents who educate their children differently than I do, but to worship. School choice is a gift that should not be taken for granted.
4. No school choice is more powerful than God.
I needn’t fear that a particular school choice will hinder my children’s chance for salvation. God is omnipotent. If He wants to save my kids, He will, and absolutely nothing can stop Him. My hope for their salvation isn’t in a particular school choice; it’s in Christ alone.
