Hope Comes to Stay is the debut children’s book by author Clarissa Moll. This book tells the story of Lela, a little girl whose father has recently died. Lela experiences the grieving process along with a new stuffed bear she names Bear. As Lela processes the death of her father, she learns how to express her feelings in words. Having only experienced grief as an adult, I believe this book is an incredibly helpful tool because it gives language to the emotions children are likely to feel as they experience grief.
The tone of Hope Comes to Stay is gentle and compassionate. The book’s illustrations are comforting with their beauty. The book concludes with a note for parents and caregivers that includes ways adults can help children grieve with hope.
