Last Light Over Galveston is the latest title by Christian fiction author Jennifer L. Wright. This story is about Kathleen McDaniel, who lands in Galveston while running from her home life. Having endured a painful situation, she finds sanctuary at St. Mary’s Orphan Asylum and assumes an alias to keep her past from catching up to her. While there, she finds a family of sorts among the nuns and orphans and befriends a local man named Matthew.
This story occurs just before, during, and after the Galveston hurricane of 1900. Although this book is historical fiction, it was a lovely read because it includes many true details, like the fact that Clara Barton was present after the hurricane. It also mentions a few Galveston landmarks, including the lovely St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Galveston is special to me because my family vacations there at least once a year. Before reading Last Light Over Galveston, I wasn’t very familiar with the island’s legacy and history before and after the hurricane.
The book prompted me to do some research, and doing so helped me learn more about a place I love. The story was compelling, and I couldn’t put the book down. It contains elements of romance that are tastefully included, and what I loved most were the truths about God that Kathleen learned during her time on the island. This book was one of the best Christian historical fiction books I’ve ever read, and I can’t wait to read more by Jennifer L. Wright.
