After experiencing my recent miscarriage, one podcast that especially encouraged my heart is Held hosted by Abbey Wedgeworth. Each episode features a different guest that Abbey interviews while discussing the various aspects of miscarriage from a biblical perspective. I was so blessed by the podcast that I had to order the companion book and I’m so thankful that I did. Held: 31 Biblical Reflections on God’s Comfort and Care in the Sorrow of Miscarriage is an extremely helpful resource that truly lives up to its title. Held is unique in that each chapter concludes with questions to ponder and space for journaling. It also has devotionals by other authors including Courtney Reissig, Lore Ferguson Wilbert, and Kristie Anyabwile. dispersed throughout. This aspect of the book increased by encouragement by providing me with a great cloud of witnesses in a sense who have walked the road of miscarriage before me and have lived to tell about the Lord’s kindness to them on it.

Having experienced miscarriage herself, Abbey writes in a tone that is equal parts grace and truth. I found her gentle words especially encouraging. One example of them is found on page 51 where she wrote, “We can trust that if God has not revealed it, it isn’t something we need to know in order to grow or to grieve. We must labor to entrust the secret things to God, who is more on our side than we could ever be ourselves. He knows all things; he knows what is best for us. Dear sister, even as your questions bound, cling to what you know—to what God has revealed; his Son, his characters, his commands, and his ways. Let all of your ‘whys’ lead you to the good ‘who.’ He doesn’t promise to give us the answers, but he has given us himself: the God who is perfectly wise; the God who knows all things; the God who works for our good.” Read my full review here.
