I received The Sword compliments of New Growth Press in exchange for my honest review.
The Sword: Magnus and The Mystery of Romans is the latest children’s book by author and pastor Marty Machowski. This book is really unique as it combines a chapter book story and devotional content. The book begins as the main character, Brant, and his sister Katana discover a book containing a letter from a soldier named Magnus. The letter explains the purpose of the two ancient swords that were found with the book and tells of a third sword, the Sword of Truth. Brant and Katana are charged with examining Paul’s letter to the Romans to unlock the mystery of the swords. They study Romans together with their parents in hopes of solving the mystery.
Between the chapters are devotionals that are short yet theologically rich. Each one begins with passages of Scripture to read and then content that explains those verses in a way that is easy for children to comprehend. The Sword is a story based on The Romans Road, which is included in the book’s epilogue. The epilogue elaborates on the steps in The Romans Road and includes reflection questions parents can discuss with their children. The illustrations in The Sword are captivating, and I think it’s neat that they were created by an illustrator based in Rome.
The book’s concept is so creative in how it combines storytelling and devotional content. Our family has been using this for our family devotion time, and we love it! This is a book I highly recommend and I eagerly anticipate reading more by Marty in the future!
