Hume Lake Trip 2020

Although the phrase “The happiest place on earth” is generally used to reference Disneyland, I prefer to use it in reference to Hume Lake Christian Camps. Hume Lake is a place that is dear to my heart as it is where my family spent a majority of our vacations during my childhood and even early adult years. Once Derek and I got married, moved, and began having children, it seemed like the opportunity to visit Hume was a distant hope. We were ecstatic when my parents reached out earlier this year to see if we would be interested in doing a family vacation together just like we used to.

It was very special to me that my little family got to see and experience many of the places and activities I participated in on my annual family vacations. Hume Lake was founded in 1946 and my family became familiar with it as my great grandparents once owned Cabin 46 there. While the cabin no longer remains, there is a new one built on the original foundation. We had the privilege of staying in it years ago and it was quite fun.

This year we enjoyed Cabin 309 which should probably be referred to as The Brady Bunch cabin. Walking across the threshold was like stepping back in time to the 1970s. The cabin’s interior is primarily composed of wood planks as well as appliances and decor from the 70s. Although the campground wasn’t hosting traditional summer camps this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, many of the Hume amenities were still open! We enjoyed eating our favorite foods from The Snack Shop as well as swimming in Sandy Cove. Derek and I spent our last morning there enjoying coffee and reading our Bibles as the sun rose over the lake. It was purely magical. While our time there is never enough and I certainly miss the cooler temperatures, we are very much anticipating visiting again in the future.

As a side note, there is a Hume Relief Fund which you can donate to in order to help Hume Lake recover many of the financial losses they experienced this summer. One neat way of contributing to this fund is by purchasing this lovely print by Jessica Provencher. I became familiar with Jessica, naturally, through a book. She and her husband Devon have published The Gospel board book with Crossway and I enjoy reading it with Ava nightly.
