The Christmas Surprise is the tenth book in the children’s book series Little Me, Big God by Steph Williams. My daughters received the first nine books in the series as a gift last Christmas so we were especially excited to add The Christmas Surprise to our collection.

This little book is an adaptation of the account of Jesus’s birth as recorded in the Bible. I love that all books in this series begin with the phrase, “A true story from the Bible” so that little ones will learn early on that the Bible is true. The book begins with a brief overview of the account from Genesis 3 in which sin entered the world. It tells children about God’s promise to send a Savior and how that promise was ultimately fulfilled when Jesus came to earth.

One aspect of the book that I really appreciate is its attention to Biblical accuracy. On the page in which the wise men visit Jesus, He is illustrated as a young boy and not a baby. Although many nativity sets feature the wise men, from Matthew 2:1 we know that they likely visited Jesus, Mary, and Joseph some time after Jesus was born. In Matthew 2:16, we learn that based on the wise men’s search for Jesus, Herod issued a decree that all male children two and under were to be killed. It seems that Jesus was likely a toddler around the time of the wise men’s visit and that Herod was attempting to ensure that no other king would take his place.

While this isn’t the most important aspect of the nativity story, it’s important to me because it demonstrates the care of those who created The Christmas Surprise in ensuring that children have an accurate understanding of the Bible early on. The conclusion of the book includes a note for adult readers as well as the text of Luke 1:26-35 so they can read the Biblical account to their children. I’m really thankful for The Christmas Surprise and look forward to reading more in the Little Me, Big God series!

I received The Christmas Surprise compliments of The Good Book Company in exchange for my honest review.
