The Words Between Us by Erin Bartels tells the the story of Robin Windsor a young woman on the run from her past. The book immediately captivates readers as it opens with readers learning some dark details about Robin’s father. Fleeing from a dark family history, Robin has established roots in Michigan where she operates her bookstore. The bookstore is experiencing difficulty staying afloat financially when Robin’s friend Sarah encourages her to enter a local art contest to win the funds needed to keep the store open.

As Robin begins working with a team to create a 3D dinosaur made out of books, she begins receiving mysterious packages of books in the mail. The books are from Robin’s first love, Peter, and they were left to him upon his mother’s death. When Robin and Peter were younger, they had an arrangement whereby Peter would supply Robin with his mother’s books and Robin would pay for each one with a custom written poem.

When Robin receives the books, it has been years since she last spoke with Peter due to a conflict that arose between them. The timing of the books appearing along with other details in Robin’s life all seem to overlap and ultimately, it is for her good. The Words Between Us is an interesting book in that it is Christian fiction yet it contains darker undertones. Although the book isn’t scary, it did contain an element of suspense which I enjoyed. It seems that the bulk of Christian fiction contains fluffy, obviously predictable plot lines. The Words Between Us offers a fresh and unique type of Christian fiction.

The storyline fluctuated between the past and present. Between the elements of suspense and romance, I couldn’t put it down. Although the book didn’t end in quite the manner I was hoping for, I still greatly enjoyed it. The ending gives readers a hint of what happens but I didn’t necessarily feel that all the loose ends were tied up. That aside, I found The Words Between Us to be an intelligently written delightful read. Overall, I really enjoyed The Words Between Us and am pleased to recommend it.

I received The Words Between Us compliments of Revell in exchange for my honest review.
