Search N Rescue Book Review

Search N Rescue is the first book by evangelist Eddie Roman. My husband and I have the pleasure of knowing Eddie and his wife Carri personally (they even took our wedding photos!), so I was really excited when I found out that Eddie was writing a book. Having witnessed Eddie do open-air preaching, I wondered if Search N Rescue would have applications for an introvert like me.

It was exciting to read as Eddie explained that there are different methods for evangelism. These often involve engaging with people in whatever circumstances the Lord has you in. As one who struggles with fear of man, I was really encouraged as Eddie shared his own personal struggles in this area and how the Lord kindly has helped him grow as an evangelist.

One of the aspects of Search N Rescue that I really enjoyed is that it explores the various facets of evangelism. Search N Rescue compares what the Bible says about evangelism with what culture (even church culture) tends to believe about the subject. Reading Search N Rescue encouraged me to continue sharing the good news of the gospel with the lost and to not lose heart when it becomes discouraging.

In the book, Eddie mentioned using The Good Person Test, made famous by evangelist Ray Comfort, when sharing the gospel with unbelievers. Although I was familiar with how the test works, it was so helpful to read Eddie’s overview of it because it explains the gospel simply and accurately. Recently I had an unexpected opportunity to share the gospel with a family member and I was so grateful that I had the principles Eddie shares fresh in my mind!

One convicting statement from Eddie that I really appreciate is, “Your conduct speaks volumes before you open your mouth. Ask yourself this simple question: is there anything about my behavior that is hindering my witness?” I’ve observed various scenarios in which individuals have claimed to be evangelizing in the name of Jesus while simultaneously displaying atrocious, ungodly behavior. This seems to be a common occurrence so I’m especially grateful that Eddie addressed how our actions play a serious role in how we witness to the lost.

On page 47 of the book, Eddie tells readers, “Just remember you are talking with a person who was created by the God you love. They are not the enemy; Satan is the enemy. They are not a prospective notch on your belt, a win for the ol‘ Facebook status or an evangelism conquest. They are a person headed for hell in desperate need of salvation.” I was grateful for this thought because it helps Christians remember how they ought to care for the lost. It also serves as a helpful reminder that God is the one who saves souls, not us.

Although Eddie possesses deep theological knowledge, he writes about evangelism in a way that is easy to understand. I really enjoyed reading Search N Rescue and had a hard time putting it down. In addition to being a practical resource, Search N Rescue is greatly encouraging and a book that every Christian needs to read.

If you are looking for a practical, biblical approach to growing in your love for Jesus by sharing about Him with others, I highly recommend Search N Rescue.

I received Search N Rescue compliments of Eddie Roman in exchange for my honest review.
